"And He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.'"
- Mark 16:15
Everyday during the Mass, bread and wine is miraculously transformed into Christ's Body and Blood. Although this event is in itself a miracle, there have been cases of extraordinary Eucharistic miracles over the centuries; some have even occurred during the 21st century. One such Eucharistic miracle occurred in Legnica Poland in 2013.
At Christmas Day Mass, a consecrated Host was accidently dropped and then placed in a container with water to dissolve. Instead of dissolving, however, red stains appeared on the Host. The Host was examined by various research institutes, which concluded that the Host contained muscle tissue, most likely from the heart. The tissue also showed signs of being under great distress. This scientific evidence demonstrates what we as Catholics believe about the Eucharist: Jesus is truly present there. The Bishop of Legnica approved the Host for veneration in 2016.
Even though we may not witness these miracles every day, they have certainly happened, and are not merely events of the Middle Ages. Modern Eucharistic miracles demonstrate that Christ is truly present with His people. Always. When you see the Eucharist at the Mass, know of Jesus' love for you. A love so great that he humbles himself to come to you in a piece of bread. Think about that the next time you witness the Consecration during the Mass. It is a beautiful and humbling moment.
